Rose Meets His Mentor

At this point, most smart basketball people can generally agree that Derrick Rose is going to be a fantastic basketball player. Amazingly, he’s done so well over his first few weeks in the league without any other true point guard on the roster or in the coaching staff to share secrets of the trade. It’s not like running the point is easy. There are quarterback coaches in the NFL, but so far Rose has been on his own.

That all changed late last week when the Bulls signed Lindsey Hunter for the rest of the year.

On top of the fact that he’s the only Chicago Bull with a championship ring, Hunter’s been around for a decade and a half,...

Rose, Del Negro forever talking turkey

By K.C. Johnson-Chicago Tribune

Several times each game, Bulls coach Vinny Del Negro waves Derrick Rose to the sideline for a chat.

On one level, it’s just a coach talking to his floor general, sharing some of the knowledge he gleaned from playing guard during his 11-year NBA career.

On another, it goes much deeper than that, a rookie coach and a rookie point guard relying on each other to navigate the countless new experiences both are facing.

“It’s amazing to be in the same category with those guys,” says Rose, raising his eyebrows in gratitude and disbelief. “I hope I live up to those expectations. It was enough for me just to get into the NBA, but to get an endorsement from Wilson… man… it’s amazing. This opportunity can…

Career night for Derrick not enough to leade Bulls past Hawks

Derrick matched his career high with 26 points, pulled down a career high 10 rebounds, and added 6 assists, despite suffering a pulled muscle in his back during the 1st quarter. Derrick refused to leave the game, and opted to play through the pain. He ended up playing over 42 minutes, standing up during timeouts to keep his back as loose as it could be.

“He pulled a muscle in his back in the first quarter,” said Bulls coach Vinny Del Negro. “I think he’ll be fine. His back tightened up a little. He wasn’t sitting during timeouts very often. He didn’t want to come out of the game. We were going to take him out of…
