Career high for D Rose leads Bulls past Celtics in game 1

Playoff experience? Who needs playoff experience? Apparently not the three players who had the least amount on the TD Banknorth Garden court Saturday.

With rookie Derrick Rose producing the best playoff performance by anyone in a Bulls uniform since the Jordan era, and with strong support from Tyrus Thomas and Joakim Noah, the Bulls stunned the sellout crowd of 18,624 — and the defending-champion Boston Celtics — with a 105-103 overtime victory in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference first-round series.

In their postseason debuts, Rose had game highs in points (36) and assists (11), while Noah added a double-double with 11 points and a game-high 17 rebounds. Thomas had 16 points, including the game-winning basket — a 21-foot jumper from the left corner with 50.5 seconds left in overtime.

Even without injured star Kevin Garnett, the Celtics, at least on their home court, were expected to control their young opponents. So, is the experience factor overrated?

‘‘No, I think it does play a role,’‘ Bulls coach Vinny Del Negro said. ‘‘It definitely helps as the games go on and the moments get bigger. And what it does for a young team like us, it builds confidence, shows the level that you can play at.’‘

As good as Rose was during the regular season, he elevated his game to another level Saturday, going 12-for-19 from the field and 12-for-12 from the free-throw line before fouling out late in overtime.

‘‘Rose was absolutely fantastic,’‘ Celtics coach Doc Rivers said.

‘‘He’s one of the toughest point guards to stay in front of,’‘ Celtics point guard Rajon Rondo said. ‘‘He’s definitely quick, and he also used his strength to elevate over myself and our bigs — and he finished at the rim extremely well.’‘
