Surrounded by family and friends, Bulls rookie Derrick Rose said his first All-Star experience was one he always will remember. Sharing it with his mother, Brenda, and brothers Wayne, Reggie and Alan made it extra special.
‘‘I don’t get as much time to spend with them because of my schedule,’‘ Rose said. ‘‘We are very close, and this experience is as much for them as it is me.’‘
Rose, who participated in the Rookie Challenge on Friday and won the Skills Challenge on Saturday, said he learned a lot about being a professional.
‘‘Just being observant, you can pick up so much,’‘ he said. ‘‘This weekend is about winning and becoming a winner in every part of your life, on and off the court.’‘
Rose said he received congratulatory text messages and playful kidding from teammates Kirk Hinrich and Drew Gooden, but he said the best part was watching his mother enjoy herself.
‘‘The trophy I won is hers,’‘ he said. ‘‘It’s going in the family room in a case she has had while collecting items since I was playing in grammar school. Sometimes I can look at her and know she is really proud.’‘
